Shinichi Maruyama

Staggeringly beautiful, no? Photographer Shinichi Maruyama captures the beauty and movement of Chinese calligraphy by using buckets of ink, water, large brushes, and a strobe light.
For Maruyama, the spontaneity of the process is what he finds most exciting. “Each stroke is unique, ephemeral. I can never copy or recreate them,” he says. “I know something fantastic is happening, but I can’t fully understand the event until I look at these captured afterimages.”
His breathtaking photography will be on display starting tomorrow (July 9) through August 18th at Donna Karan New York, 819 Madison Avenue.
