Fresh | Citron de Vigne

You guys.

I can't stop smelling myself.

It's getting to a point where it's embarrassing - I'll be sitting on the subway, totally normal, and then suddenly I'll compulsively sniff my wrists. And then I'm "that" weirdo on the train.

But it can't be helped; I completely blame the new perfume I'm wearing: Citron de Vigne by Fresh. Apparently the scent was inspired by the co-founder's trip to the Veuve Clicquot vineyards in France - I wasn't aware of this when I made the purchase, but ohhhhh how it all makes sense now. OF COURSE I WOULD BE DRAWN TO THIS PERFUME. OF COURSE.

- Top Notes: neroli, bitter orange, pink grapefruit
- Heart Notes: Fresh’s pinot noir accord (bergamot, dark almost, musk, white sandalwood, rose), jasmine tea leaves, lemongrass
- Base Notes: patchouli, sandalwood, amber

It's a crisp yet soft scent, with plenty of subtleties that will have you compulsively sniffing your own wrists in public. And then we'll be a league of compulsive wrist-sniffers.

Resonance

This left me dumbfounded:

Meara O'Reilly (the composer) writes,
Chladni patterns were discovered by Robert Hook and Ernst Chladni in the 18th and 19th centuries. They found that when they bowed a piece of glass covered in flour, (using an ordinary violin bow), the powder arranged itself in resonant patterns according to places of stillness and vibration. Today, Chladni plates are often electronically driven by tone generators and used in scientific demonstrations, but with carefully sung notes (and a transducer driving the plate), I'm able to explore the same resonances. I'm currently writing songs based on sequences of patterns.

Tighten Up

The Black Keys played a super incredible, super intimate set last night at Housing Works Bookstore in Soho, which included some tracks off of their stellar new album 'Brothers'; I can't wait to see them again at Summerstage!

Oh, and the MV for 'Tighten Up' had me laughing out loud:

Who You Gonna Call?

The New York Public Library is facing an epic budget cut of $37 million, which could result in branches closing, a major cut in programs, and 6-day service scaled down to 4-day service. So who you gonna call?
David from the New York Public Library says, "We're facing a crippling proposed budget cut at the NYPL - so we called Improv Everywhere, who recreated Ghostbusters in our main reading room to a delighted crowd of onlookers to see if they bust budget cuts as well as they bust ghosts. We could use all the support we can get right now in changing minds at City Hall."
Watch the clip below, and donate here to help keep the wonderful NYPL just the way it is.

NPR Tiny Desk Concert | Phoenix

OH FRABJOUS DAY! Phoenix played a 4-song acoustic set for NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series - including a gorgeous rendition of 'Playground Love' - and it was glorious and swoon-worthy. But then again, everything they do is glorious and swoon-worthy to my ears. Watch it here.

2010 Bryant Park Movies Schedule

Some of my fondest NYC-in-the-summertime moments have been spent picnicking on the Bryant Park lawn with friends -- and a sea of New Yorkers -- watching a classic film. (This blog's header is a photo I snapped during the 'Annie Hall' screening a few years ago!) Needless to say I'm pretty excited about the announcement of this year's lineup, which includes all of the above, and more.

Bryant Park lawn opens at 5:00 PM, and the film begins between 8:00-9:00 PM. The lawn fills up in minutes, so if you or a friend can get there when the lawn opens to save a spot for the group, you're golden.

ES&tMZ | 'Home'

This song makes me nostalgic for experiences I may not have had in this lifetime, and this beautiful video does the same. Le sigh.

The Debonaire Mix | Vol. 04

When I started making these mixes, I made a conscious decision not to focus too much on current music (because there are plenty of other blogs that focus solely on music and do a fine job)--but HOT DAYUM, there's so much great stuff coming out these days I can't help but include some of it.

In this installment, we've got some sickkkkkk new music from -- deep breath -- The Black Keys, Janelle Monae, Broken Social Scene, Jakob Dylan, Sleigh Bells, The Tallest Man on Earth, and The National (their new album 'High Violet' gets better with every listen). And thrown into the mix are some oldies-but-goodies like Faces, Gram Parsons, and Kate Bush.

Here's the tracklist, ON YOUR MARKS GET SET GO:

'Texico Bitches' - Broken Social Scene
'Tightrope' - Janelle Monae
'Crown On the Ground' - Sleigh Bells
'Les Cactus' - Jacques Dutronc
'Next Girl' - The Black Keys
'Just Another Honky' - Faces
'Afraid of Everyone' - The National
'Hounds of Love' - Kate Bush
'Nothing But The Whole Wide World' - Jakob Dylan
'The Drying of The Lawns' - The Tallest Man on Earth
'Brass Buttons' - Gram Parsons
'Blue Beard' - Band of Horses

Thank You For Shopping With Us

Recently I've been getting back into using canvas totes (just bought a Baggu Duck Bag and love it), but this one pretty much takes the cake.

Band of Horses | Infinite Arms

If you woke up today thinking, "MAN I WISH THE NEW BAND OF HORSES ALBUM WOULD JUST COME OUT ALREADY," it's your lucky day --- you can stream the entire album (which comes out on the 18th) on their website. The tracks I've listened to so far are top-notch, so hop to it, kiddos!

World News

Saw these guys play Bowery Ballroom last Friday, and needless to say they rawked it (along with a couple of friends of mine who put together a last-minute string arrangement for a few songs, huzzah). Thumbs up to all of that. And thumbs up to this MV for 'World News'.

Why Don't You Love Me

Beyonce is like a Bettie Page/Betty Draper hybrid gone rogue in her video for 'Why Don't You Love Me' - and I loves it. A++ for the styling. I hope this B.B. Homemaker persona is here to stay - for at least a little while.

Vhere's Valdo?

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have already seen this brilliant and hilarious 'Werner Herzog Reads Where's Waldo' clip that I linked to the other day, but it was too good not to share on le blog.

There's more of where that came from: Werner Herzog Reads Curious George, and Werner Herzog Reads Madeleine.

And I got a kick out of the suggestions Google gave me when I began typing in my search:

But seriously guys, where IS fluffy???
